It is home to the largest academic hospital in the Netherlands and is proud owner of a great MBA program at its Rotterdam School of Management.

Since 1864, when it started off as a museum, the Royal Tropical Institute focussed on tropical countries, first only on the Dutch colonies, later on the rest of the world. Its mission has broadened from just building up a collection, to providing knowledge about tropical diseases and the development of cures and diagnostics. It focusses on helping vulnerable producers in developing countries and thereby improving economic development. Biomedical research is valorised into diagnostic tools and treatments for a range of tropical diseases.
